“In 10 sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 you will see the difference, and in 30 you'll have a whole new body.”
- Joseph Pilates
Reformer Pilates is the deluxe version of traditional mat Pilates. It involves exercises performed on a specially designed machine called a reformer. It uses springs for resistance and straps to enforce symmetry, which adds an extra dimension to your workout, helping to build strength, flexibility, and balance in a fun and dynamic way. Not only does it tone your muscles and improve posture, but it also boosts core strength. And with the use of the jump board accessory, which essentially allows you to jump while lying down, you can also improve your endurance and cardio health.
Reformer Pilates Compared to:
Yoga
Yoga promotes flexibility, but it can take a long time to build up strength, and the strength that is finally obtained is often specific to holding particular poses. Pilates is more functional in this respect.
Weight Training
Weight training builds strength, but it’s high impact and comes with a high risk of injury. Pilates, as it was originally designed to be rehabilitative, is low impact and low risk. Not only that, practicing Pilates can decrease risk of future injury.
Cardio
Cardio enhances stamina and endurance but is also often high-impact. Running, for example, frequently leads to severe joint issues over time. Using the jump board accessory on the reformer allows you to build stamina and endurance, but it's low-impact and more dynamic in that it grants you the ability to customize your resistance, whereas gravity always remains constant.
Pilates is the best of all worlds!
It also acts as the perfect complement to other athletic pursuits, whether it's running, surfing, tennis, football, martial arts, etc. Last but not least, it can be therapeutic for the issues and injuries caused by other athletic endeavors, which is why physical therapists frequently recommend it to their patients.
